How to Update WordPress PHP

posted On September 22, 2021

Checking Your Present PHP Version

You have to log into the ‘one.com control panel.’ You have to select ‘Advanced setting’ and then ‘PHP and database setting.’ Now you have to go to ‘Update PHP version by scrolling down and check your present PHP version. It’s good if you have at least PHP version 7.4.

Updating The Latest Version of WordPress

You have to log into the ‘WordPress Admin,’ and select ‘Dashboard,’ and then ‘Updates.’ You have to check if the latest WordPress version (core) is installed. You also have to check themes and plugins to see if they are up to date.

Installing The ‘one.com PHP scanner’

You have to select ‘one.com’ and then ‘Plugins’ in the WordPress Admin. Then you will find the ‘one.com PHP scanner’ and select ‘Install now.’ Now, you have to select ‘Activate.’

Running A-Scan and Fixing Potential Issues

You have to select ‘PHP scanner’ from the menu and then select ‘PHP version 8.0.’ Now, you have to select ‘All themes and plugins’ and then ‘Start scan.’

You have to wait until the scan finishes. There can be three results: Compatible, or Warning, or Error. You have to fix plugins or themes if there are errors; you have to update the latest versions or find alternative plugins.

Updating The Latest Version of PHP

You should keep PHP error messages on so that you can get alerted if there’s an issue. In the ‘one.com control panel,’ you have to go to ‘PHP and database settings.’

Then you have to go to ‘PHP error messages’ by scrolling down and then select the error messages as ‘On’ and select ‘Update.’ Now, you have to change the PHP version to 8.0 and select ‘Update.’

Verification of The Site Functioning

After the PHP update, it takes at least 20 minutes or more for the changes to be in effect. You should check your site at least twice for the next 24 hours. Your site may not work properly due to a theme or plugin.

Therefore, you need to switch to a default theme in WordPress, such as ‘Twenty Seventeen,’ and deactivate every installed plugin. Then you have to enable the themes plugins one by one and check every time if the site works well. That should be enough.
