What Is VPS Hosting

posted On October 5, 2021

VPS stands for the virtual private server. It utilizes virtualization technology to give you private or dedicated resources on a server having many users. It’s a very stable and secure hosting service. It’s cheaper than renting a full server. Usually, it’s suitable for website owners with medium-level traffic that crosses the shared hosting plan limits but still requires no dedicated server resource. There are usually many hosting plans in VPS solutions. At Hostinger, there are six VPS plans which are suitable for different business needs.

Functioning of VPS Hosting

Servers are computers for storing web host files and databases required for respective websites. If an online visitor attempts to access a website, their browser requests the website’s server, and it sends the necessary files over the internet. VPS hosting gives you a virtual server simulating a physical server. In reality, several users share the machine.

However, the hosting provider sets up a virtual layer in the server’s operating system (OS). This layer creates partitions in the server, and each user can install their operating systems and software.

A VPS is both private and virtual because users have complete controls. It’s separated from other users of the server on the operating system level. VPS technology is like creating partitions on one’s computer when he/she wants to run many operating systems (e.g., Linux and Windows) without a reboot.

VPS lets you install your site within a safe container with guaranteed memory, CPU cores, disk space, etc. There’s no need to share with others. VPS hosting provides you similar root-level access as if your server is dedicated at a lower cost.

Advantages and Limitations of VPS

You will have many advantages by using VPS. It’s more reliable and faster than shared hosting servers. There’s almost no fluctuation in available resources as server resources are guaranteed. Also, your site won’t have any problems due to traffic surges and issues with other servers.

However, It provides you superuser (root) access to the server. There’s better privacy; other server users can’t access your database. You can easily upgrade the server resources when your site grows.

However, VPS has some limitations too. It costs higher than shared hosting. You will need higher technical knowledge to manage the server. Also, there may be security vulnerabilities due to improperly configured servers.

VPS hosting is a very popular hosting service. It’s always useful to know the basic details of VPS hosting.
